The 2016 American Music Award nominations were announced on Monday and one of the nominees has just broken a 32 year old record. Hip Hop artist Drake is leading the way with an astounding 13 nominations! The previous record, held by the late Michael Jackson, was 11 nominations in one year.
Seems like the usual suspects are listed as nominees this year with the exception of the New Artist category. Zayn Malik has received his first American Music Award nomination as a solo artist. The other nominees in the category are: Alessia Cara, DNCE, The Chainsmokers and Shawn Mendes.
The Artist of the Year category consists of some of the biggest names in music today. The nominees are: Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Drake, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood & The Weekend.
Vying for top honor in the Video of the Year category are: Justin Bieber – “Sorry“, Desiigner – “Panda” and Rihanna featuring Drake – “Work“.
One of the most interesting categories this year is Top Soundtrack. Purple Rain by the late Prince, which was released in July of 1984, has been nominated along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Suicide Squad.
Fact: Purple Rain won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Album and Favorite Soul/R&B Album in 1985.
You may be wondering how an album that won an award 32 years ago was nominated again. Here’s how: Purple Rain and The Very Best of Prince both re-entered the Billboard 200 Album chart following Prince’s death this past April. Both titles had huge album sales due to fans flocking to retailers to purchase the late singer’s music. According to The Hollywood Reporter: Between May 1991 and December 2009, older albums — referred to as catalog — were mostly barred from charting on the Billboard 200. In December 2009, the chart began allowing catalog titles back onto the chart, clearing the way for Purple Rain’s return in 2012. (Read more of the Hollywood Reporter’s in depth article here: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/prince-dead-singer-takes-top-887247). It’s also been reported that a deluxe edition of Purple Rain will be released sometime in 2017.
Lastly, the following statement on the award show’s official website explains how artists are nominated.
American Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring.
