On Monday, FBI Director James Comey officially confirmed the investigation of alleged tampering in the 2016 presidential election. In a statement at the House Intelligence Committee, Comey said, “I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.”
As of last week the agency and computer scientists started to examine a computer server connection between the Trump Organization and a Russian bank.
According to the website Mic.com, Right Wing news outlets such as Brietbart, Infowars and the Russian state-sponsored RT News and Sputnik News are also being investigated. McClatchyDC.com has stated that investigators are looking into evidence that bots sent out “strategically timed” pro-Trump articles on social media with links to the above mentioned news outlets during the presidential campaign. The articles, which did not always contain true facts, were allegedly used to counteract negative press about Trump.
Comey was unable to say when the investigation, which started last July, will be completed.
Kat’s Take: There has been a lot of talk about an investigation occurring, so it’s good to finally have confirmation about it. If tampering did take place, it would explain how Trump won the election when he lost the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. I won’t speculate how I think the investigation will turn out, but if this election was stolen, I hope all involved will be persecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Matt’s Take: Trump has been trying to sweep this whole thing under the rug, so it’s a relief to know that an investigation is underway. We deserve to know the full story. However, I’m also worried that at the end of the day, many Americans simply won’t care. We’re so disappointed by our political system that we pretty much assume all our politicians are corrupt and involved in shady dealings. If it turns out there is hard evidence that Russia interfered in our election and Trump’s team played any part in it, we can’t afford to just shrug it off.
